Tee Creek Dog Training Center
Sheep Camp with Kathy Warner
|
Last year five of us were able to attend Sheep Camp at Tee Creek with Kathy Warner. There were the most amazing days we spent with our dogs! Camp was five days with each day starting at 8:00 am and ending around 4:30 pm. Each day was an intense immersion into the world of herding to build a solid foundation with our dogs. We worked on everything from keeping the dog interested in stock to driving to our own particular “training issues”. The first day also had a Power Point presentation that delved into our emotions pretty deep and gave us real insight as to why we have the problems we do and how to fix them. If you have ever been to the One Day Herding Clinic with Kathy, the presentation we saw took it to the next level. Kathy keeps the Camp going at a steady pace. A team works for about 15-20 minutes, then the next team works and the rotation continues through the day. Throughout the day we were encouraged to ask questions whenever we had one so that we never sat through an exercise puzzled as to what we were learning. Kathy also demonstrated each step for us using several dogs of her own that were at different levels of training. At the end of each day we analyzed what we had worked on to be sure we had things clear in our minds before tomorrow came around. The best part about Sheep Camp is how Kathy broke everything down to small pieces so each team learns and can be successful. She then relates it to its “final function” - where it falls in herding. If you have ever taken an obedience class with Kathy you will know what that means! You don’t get “herding exercises” at Sheep Camp. You get all the pieces needed, then they get put into perspective and you end up not just with the whole picture but a picture you understand. The time you spend at Sheep Camp will be unforgettable
